LEARN ALL ABOUT MIKEY
Mikey’s musical career began in 1998 when, aged three, he pressed his face against the television while dancing to Dance The Night Away by The Mavericks on Top of the Pops. It was a strong start. The TV survived, for those wondering.
He grew up with a peculiar but excellent soundtrack – Motown and Soul courtesy of his parents, and Metal, Pop Punk and Grunge thanks to his older brother. This explains his occasional volume issues.
At around eleven, Mikey briefly took up bass guitar, despite being almost the same size as it, but after one go on a friend’s drum kit at band practice he ditched the bass and relentlessly campaigned for drums until his parents gave in and got him lessons. From then on he practised obsessively, shutting himself away until he’d nailed his homework or mastered whatever song he was fixated on, and when he wasn’t playing he was lost down YouTube drum-solo rabbit holes. Over time, and despite the usual teenage resistance to anything educational, his teacher broadened his taste, with discoveries like Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock and Tower of Power becoming major turning points that introduced him to groove, finesse and real musicianship.
Ever since leaving school, Mikey has made a living doing what he loves: touring Europe, working with artists in the studio, playing weddings and corporates, performing in pantomime, and generally saying “yes” to most musical adventures. He also teaches over 20 drum students each week from home, bravely allowing that many drummers into his personal space on a regular basis.
A couple of career highlights so far include playing the iconic London Palladium in 2024, and touring Europe with legendary guitarist, Albert Lee.
To cut it short, Mikey hit a drum once and hasn’t really stopped since.
His favourite Bruce Springsteen songs are: Darkness on the Edge of Town, The Promised Land, and Because the Night
Random facts: He shares his birthday (though not the year) with Max Weinberg; he supports Arsenal, which builds character; a chess enthusiast; and a firm believer that all cats are superior beings.
